ETA 2824-2
The ETA 2824 line began in 1971, when ETA SA — then part of ASUAG, which later consolidated into the Swatch Group — developed an affordable, high-volume automatic caliber as a response to the expanding quartz threat. The movement drew on the architecture of the Eterna caliber 1427, a central-rotor automatic from the 1950s–60s, and is attributed in part to ETA designer Edwin Jacob. The design was refined through two subsequent iterations: the 2824-1 (c. 1979, 21 jewels) and finally the 2824-2 (1982, 25 jewels), which remains in production today.
At 25.6 mm in diameter and 4.6 mm tall, the 2824-2 offered a practical footprint suitable for a wide range of case designs. Its 4 Hz beat rate and bidirectional-winding ball-bearing rotor became industry benchmarks for reliability at a moderate price. ETA sells the movement in four named grades — Standard, Elaboré, Top, and Chronometer — differing in the number of regulation positions, the quality of the hairspring and balance wheel, and the anti-shock system fitted.
The caliber was adopted by scores of brands across the market: TAG Heuer marketed it as the Calibre 5, Breitling based its B17 on it, and Tudor specified it for the Heritage Black Bay, among many others. Its combination of availability, easy serviceability, and abundant spare parts made it the default choice for mid-range Swiss automatic watches for decades.
In 2002, Swatch Group CEO Nicolas Hayek announced plans to wind down movement sales to external brands, triggering intervention by the Swiss Competition Commission (WEKO) and spurring competitors to develop alternatives. The most significant response was the Sellita SW200-1, a near-identical drop-in substitute that appeared around 2007. Despite the rise of clones and in-house development by formerly reliant brands, the 2824-2 remains one of the most-produced mechanical movements in history and the benchmark against which mid-range Swiss automatics are measured.
