Seiko VK68
The VK68 (variant designation VK68A) is a premium meca-quartz chronograph produced by Time Module Inc. (TMI), the movement-making arm of Seiko Instruments in Japan. The spec sheet carries a revision date of December 2021, though the VK-series family has been part of TMI's catalogue for some years prior. The movement combines a standard 32,768 Hz quartz oscillator for timekeeping with an entirely mechanical module to operate the chronograph, giving the characteristic smooth-sweep chronograph seconds hand and the instant snap-back to zero on reset — qualities not achievable with a fully quartz chronograph.
Within TMI's own lineup the VK68 sits at the top of the VK series ('Premium Chronograph'), distinguished from simpler VK calibers (e.g. VK63, VK64) by its full tri-compax subdial layout: a central 1/5-second chronograph hand, a 60-minute counter, a running-seconds subdial, a 24-hour day/night indicator synchronized to the hour hand, and a quick-set date at roughly 4:30. Its nearest shelf competitors are the Ronda 5040.D and the ETA 251.262, both also meca-quartz chronographs of similar lignes size.
The movement carries zero jewels — explicitly engraved 'NO JEWELS' on the bridge — reflecting the industry-standard use of modern composite bearings in volume quartz production rather than traditional ruby jewels. Despite this, the meca-quartz architecture delivers a noticeably more satisfying pusher feel and hand motion than a fully electronic chronograph module.
Beyond Seiko's own SSB-series sports chronographs, the VK68 has been adopted by numerous independent and microbrand watch makers (Vostok-Europe, Boderry, and others) seeking a credibly mechanical-feeling chronograph at a manageable movement cost. Its 13½-ligne (Φ30.8 mm) footprint drops into most cases sized for the ETA 251.262 family, making it a practical choice for brands that switched movement suppliers.
